The AI Landscape in 2025: Trump, ByteDance and Apple Move the Global Market
January 22, 2025 | by Matos AI
In today’s AI Bulletin, we’ll be looking at the major developments shaping the global AI landscape over the past 24 hours. And what important developments we have to discuss!
The most shocking news comes from the United States, where President Trump announced a mega-project of private investment in AI infrastructure that could reach US$1.4T 500 billion. The Stargate project, a joint venture that brings together giants such as OpenAI, SoftBank and Oracle, is already building ten data centers in Texas and promises to generate more than 100,000 immediate jobs.
In my more than 25 years working in technology and innovation, I have rarely seen such a significant movement of investment in infrastructure. To put this into context, this amount is greater than the GDP of many countries. The strategic decision to keep AI development on American soil shows how technology has become a matter of national sovereignty.
But not everything is rosy in the AI market. Billionaire managers have been selling shares of leading companies in the sector, signaling caution about the sustainability of current valuations. As someone who has lived through several waves and bubbles in technology, I can say that this movement is natural and even healthy. Emerging technologies need time to mature and find their true market value.
On the other side of the world, TikTok owner ByteDance is advancing AI reasoning technologies through its DeepSeek project. It’s a move that shows how China remains determined to lead the global AI race, even with all the current geopolitical tensions.
Apple, a latecomer to the AI race, has announced that its Apple Intelligence will be automatically turned on in iOS 18.3, with an option to turn it off in the settings. It’s a risky move, given past issues with AI-generated summaries and the fact that the system still only works in English.
Amid all this development, serious concerns about safety and ethics are emerging. An article in the Kansas City Star warns of incidents involving chatbots and their impact on vulnerable people, especially young people. In parallel, the Washington Post revealed that Google is providing AI technology for military operations, raising fundamental ethical questions about the dual use of this technology.
In my experience supporting startups and innovation projects, I have always argued that technological development must be accompanied by social responsibility. The current moment in AI reminds me of the beginning of the Internet: we have immense transformative potential, but we need to establish clear ethical guidelines and efficient protection mechanisms.
What can we expect?
The current outlook suggests that 2025 will be a pivotal year for AI. Massive investment in infrastructure in the US, combined with Chinese advances, is set to further accelerate the development of the technology. At the same time, financial market warnings and security concerns indicate that we need to strike a balance between innovation and responsibility.
For entrepreneurs and companies working with AI, this moment demands special attention to governance and the social impacts of their solutions. As I always say in my mentoring sessions, it is not enough to create cutting-edge technology – we must ensure that it is beneficial to society as a whole.
