This past week has brought a stunning turnaround in the global AI landscape. China, which many saw as a mere follower of Western innovations, has demonstrated its ability to create truly disruptive solutions with the launch of DeepSeek.
The impact was so significant that it caused a sharp drop in the shares of industry giants, including Nvidia. But why exactly is this Chinese model causing such a stir?
According to BBC analysis, DeepSeek brings four revolutionary innovations:
- Open Source: Unlike closed Western models;
- Explicit Reasoning: Greater transparency in the decision-making process;
- Reinforcement Learning: A unique approach to training;
- Innovation Despite Constraints: Demonstrating that it is possible to innovate even with limitations.
The most interesting thing is that this movement coincides with important initiatives here in Brazil. MCTI announced an ambitious R$ 23 billion plan for the development of national AI by 2028. The timing could not be better: the DeepSeek case proves that developing countries can, indeed, compete in the global AI scenario.
Meanwhile, big companies continue their race. The Google just integrated its Gemini into Sheets, democratizing access to data analysis via AI. And Brazilian startups are already showing practical results, such as “Tia Bete”, a chatbot for diabetes patients that already serves 30 thousand users.
Reflections and Perspectives
In my 25+ years working in technology and innovation, I have rarely seen a more transformative moment than this. DeepSeek is not just about a new technology – it is about a fundamental shift in the global balance of power in innovation.
For us in Brazil, this brings two fundamental lessons: first, that it is possible to develop cutting-edge technology even without the resources of American giants; second, that we need to accelerate our investments in AI so as not to fall behind.
As I have been advocating in my consulting and lectures on AI, now is the time for action. Companies and governments need to understand that the window of opportunity is now open. If you want to know more about how to position your organization in this new scenario or need support in developing AI strategies, get in touch. I am available to help build this future together.
