It’s been incredible to see how the arrival of a Chinese startup in the AI race is causing a true tsunami in the global technology market. In just over 24 hours, DeepSeek has become the center of attention by showing that it is possible to develop competitive AI spending just a fraction of the billions invested by Silicon Valley giants.

In my 25+ years of following the technology and innovation market, I’ve learned that the biggest transformations often come from unexpected places. And DeepSeek’s case is emblematic: for just $6 million – compared to the $80-100 billion spent by OpenAI on ChatGPT – they created a solution that is disrupting the global market.

The Impact on Markets

The numbers are impressive: Nvidia lost US$588 billion in market value in a single day, the Nasdaq fell more than 31%, while our Bovespa rose 21%. But beyond the numbers, what strikes me most are the implications for the global innovation ecosystem.

A New Development Model

DeepSeek brings three elements that I consider fundamental for the future of technology innovation:

  • Open source and collaborative
  • Focus on research before profit
  • Efficient development with limited resources

In my experience accelerating over 10,000 startups, I’ve noticed that the greatest innovations often come from teams that know how to do more with less. DeepSeek exemplifies this perfectly.

Controversies and Challenges

It’s worth noting that not everything is rosy. Microsoft and OpenAI are investigating possible misuse of their data by DeepSeek, through a technique called “model distillation.” This raises important questions about intellectual property and ethics in AI development.

The Future of AI and Work

This moment of transformation makes us reflect on which skills will remain relevant. In my experience leading innovative educational projects, such as the ADM TECH course at Inteli, I always argue that we need to focus on developing skills that machines cannot easily replicate:

  • Critical and analytical thinking
  • Creativity and innovation
  • Emotional and empathic intelligence
  • Complex problem-solving ability

Final Reflections

The DeepSeek case shows us that we are entering a new era of AI, where innovation can come from anywhere and does not necessarily depend on billion-dollar resources. For us in Brazil, this brings interesting opportunities.
