A Chinese startup is shaking up the global AI market, sending tech giants’ stocks to historic lows and raising fundamental questions about the future of innovation in the space. In just one week, DeepSeek has achieved the seemingly impossible: surpassing ChatGPT in downloads on the U.S. App Store and causing a financial earthquake that has resulted in losses of more than US$1 trillion for Big Tech.
As someone who has been following the technology market for over 25 years and has experienced several waves and bubbles, I can say that we are facing a historic moment. Let's understand why.
What makes DeepSeek so disruptive?
The answer lies in the numbers: while giants like OpenAI and Meta have invested billions of dollars in their AI models, DeepSeek has developed its technology with just US$1.4 million. And it’s not just cheaper – it’s also more efficient, offering:
- Outperforms GPT-4 on several metrics
- Support for multiple languages, including Portuguese
- Lower need for computing resources
- Significantly lower operating costs
AI’s “Sputnik Moment”
The impact has been so significant that analysts are calling it AI’s “Sputnik moment,” in reference to the Soviet satellite that surprised the United States in 1957. The market has reacted dramatically:
- Nvidia: down 17.44% (US$$ 589 billion in market cap)
- TSMC: 14.47% drop
- Alphabet (Google): drop of 3.31%
- Microsoft: 2.37% drop
In my experience supporting startups and following the venture capital market, I have rarely seen a small company make such an impact on established players. This moment makes us question several paradigms about innovation and technology investments.
Implications for the Global Market
As an innovation and technology consultant, I see three main developments:
- Democratizing AI: DeepSeek’s success proves that it is possible to develop advanced AI with limited resources, opening doors for smaller startups.
- Questioning the investment model: The billions invested by big techs will need to be rethought in light of more efficient alternatives.
- Geopolitical shift: China demonstrates ability to compete and even surpass the US in AI innovation, even with technological constraints.
Reflections and Considerations
In my years working with startups and innovation, I have learned that moments of disruption like this are crucial for the advancement of the sector. Interestingly, even the Holy See has recently spoken out about AI, warning about the need to keep human intelligence at the center of technological development.
For Brazilian startups and entrepreneurs working with AI, this is a time of opportunity. The demonstration that it is possible to create competitive solutions with smaller budgets opens up interesting perspectives for our innovation ecosystem.
If you are developing AI solutions or planning to enter this market, now is the time to rethink strategies and seek expert guidance. My experience with more than 10,000 startups allows me to say: the opportunities are there for those who know how to seize them.
